LOD2 – Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data

The outputs of this project will range from sci-tech to socio-economic areas by providing new technologies and an underlying scientific basis for these and by applying these new technologies to a number of Semantic Web areas experiencing commercial (enterprise search, media and publishing), scientific (extraction, interlinking, ontology classification and fusion methods), and sociological (community knowledge, integration in social networks, eGovernment) success at present. The project aims to contribute high-quality interlinked versions of public Semantic Web data sets, promoting their use in new cross-domain applications by developers across the globe. The new technologies for enabling scalable management of Linked Data collections in the many billions of triples will raise the state of the art of Semantic Web data management, both commercial and open-source, providing opportunities for new products and spin-offs, and make RDF a viable choice for organizations worldwide as a premier data management format. The algorithms and (open-source) tools that the project will develop for data cleaning, linking and fusing will help creating and bootstrapping new data sets in domains that go much beyond the direct applications and data sets developed in the context of this project, to reach the overall goal of the project of making Linked Data the model of choice for next-generation IT systems and applications.

Services Made in Germany

Germany is world export champion. Although this may be true for products, the reality on the services side is a totally different story. On the contrary: most Germany companies lag way behind the international leaders when it comes to developing and industrialising services. Not to mention exports.

Yet there are huge potentials just waiting to be tapped by successfully developing and producing services and marketing them internationally.

The globalised economy opens up particular opportunities for players who offer innovative and high quality services worldwide – either to support specific products or independently.

The objective of this research project is to lay the scientific and methodological foundation for the internationalisation of the German service economy.
The University of Leipzig and the Fraunhofer Society for Industrial Engineering have teamed up with internationally experienced enterprises to tackle the research questions involved.

Products provide the terms of reference: high quality services – like high quality products – must be continuously adapted to customer requirements, market conditions, profitability considerations and technological advances.

Joined-up concepts and instruments are being developed for this purpose by the project partners to secure the success of
services in international markets.

OrViA — Orchestration and Validation of integrated Application systems

The goal of the research project OrViA is to specify, develop and prototypically deploy an architecture for the orchestration and validation of cooperative system components in mission-critical, domain-specific e-business environments. The considered environments are characterized by high requirements towards reliability of the execution of business processes as well as soft real-time requirements. The orchestration includes the partly automated transformation of business processes (e.g. Event-driven Process Chains) to executable workflow languages (e.g. BPEL). Inconsistencies and incompleteness’s of models will be identified at design time.

Experiences of involved small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) show that the full potential of business process models as a basis of a technical, system-spanning integration is not tapped. The procedure developed in OrViA combines approaches of the areas requirements engineering, model validation and model transformation. The use of the provided solution improves the effectiveness of communication between costumers, business experts, IT experts and quality managers. The tool supported identification of structural, semantic and pragmatic mistakes leads to a better quality management and improves the security and the reliability of the developed system as well. The elimination of error prone and time-intensive manual development steps enables quality and efficiency improvements that enhance the competitiveness of SMEs.

The project consortium is directed by IDS Scheer AG. Besides the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena and the Fraunhofer IAO the Universität Leipzig is one of the research partners. The practical partners including Intershop Communications AG, DVZ M-V GmbH, GODYO AG, ISA GmbH and Truition GmbH c/o AGETO GmbH come from different application domains like the e-government and e-commerce domain.

SoftWiki – Distributed, End-user Centered Requirements Engineering for Evolutionary Software Development

The aim of the cooperative research project SoftWiki is to support the collaboration of all stakeholders in software development processes in particular with respect to software requirements. Potentially very large and spatially distributed user groups shall be enabled to collect, semantically enrich, classify and aggregate software requirements. The solution will be founded on the Semantic Web standards for terminological knowledge representation. The implementation will base on generic means of semantic collaboration using next generation Web user interfaces (in the spirit of Social Software and the Web 2.0) thus fostering completely new means of Requirements Engineering with very large user groups.

ServCASE — Computer Aided Engineering for IT Enabled Services

The University of Leipzig, Department Business Information Systems works together with the Fraunhofer Society for Industrial Engineering, Technology-Partners (IDS Scheer AG, ISA Gmb H) and Applying Partners (GSM Gmb H, e-pro Solutions AG, Infoman AG, T-Systems MMS Gmb H) in a joint research initiave to research IT Enabled Services.

It is the goal of the joint project to develop and implement a reference model for the co-design of software and services. The reference model includes procedures, methods, and tools for the integrated development of software and services products. In order to achieve higher applicable usefulness, the reference model will be realized as a development platform supported by tools. Beside the superior goals of the joint project, the following sub-goals are aimed at:
    • Development of a configurable procedure while recognizing the known classes of procedure models (life cycles, iterative models, prototyping, regenerative and component models).
    • Development of methods and tools for service engineering with the focus on product models, process models, resource models and client interaction models.
    • Development of a maturity model for the co-design of software and services.
    • Combination of the model fragments into a comprehensive reference model and provision of an integrated development platform.
    • Demonstration of feasibility and applicability in business projects and application of the results in practical experience.

Integration Engineering – Development of a procedure model for the implementation of cooperative business processes in an integrated, internet-based IT infrastructure

The IT-infrastructure of enterprises is subject to changes. These changes are caused by mergers and acquisitions and the changes of the involved partners in cooperative processes, e. g. if they are organized in virtual enterprises. It is very difficult to establish integrated cooperative business processes between the partners on such a heterogeneous IT-landscape.

The goal of the research project “Integration Engineering” (IE) is therefore the development of a process model that describes the implementation of such cooperative business processes in an internet-based IT-structure. To achieve this goal typical cooperation processes and their implementations are analyzed and classified. These results are a base for the development of the process model for Integration Engineering. Furthermore the design and prototypical implementation of a tool that can support the IE-process are done. Such a tool is called CAIE (Computer Aided Integration Engineering)-tool, comparable with the software-engineering. The developed process model and the tool are used to integrate selected business processes to demonstrate the practicability of the solution.

Pre BIS – Pre Built Information Space

The goal of the project Pre BIS (Pre-Built Information Space) is to develop a system for the content engineering of dynamical, learning and role and task adapted multimedia informationroom. Thus an ontology is generated out of specific documents and business processes. Further methods for intelligent information retrieval are being worked on. For the knowlege workers in an organisation this means the development of dynamical, role adapted and semantically marked up knowledge pools.

This implies:

  • a systematic coverage of potential users, information sources and often used information types,
  • the amelioration of the quality of information retrieval, in particular of the recall through the use of methods from fields like artificial intelligence, knowledge management and knowledge production and
  • the build-up of an ontology using documents and business processes, that are specific for a particular organisation.

Ko Pro Netz: Cooperative Product-Engineering in a network of customers, suppliers and manufacturers

The conception and realization of an internet-based cooperation-network between customers, manufacturers and suppliers was the key-issue of the project "Ko Pro Netz". A cooperative product engineering was established and evaluated for selected problems occurring in the machine-building industry. The partners could use this platform to plan and realize their projects using the integrated cooperation modules.

Many of the producing enterprises have moved from the classical production chain – pre-sales, production and after-sales – to the purchase-oriented one. Therefore it is necessary to redefine the relationships between customers, manufacturers and suppliers that cover the whole life-cycle
of the developed products. Such a cooperative product engineering requires modern forms of multi-project-management. At the moment the existing synergies between such projects are not used in a satisfactory way. So the costs for such projects are rising and the achievable level of
quality is not sufficient. These problems can be solved with reliable, problem-adequate cooperation platforms, but there is a lack of.

The conception and realization of such an internet-based cooperation-network between customers, manufacturers and suppliers is the key-issue of the project "Ko Pro Netz". A cooperative product engineering is established and evaluated for selected problems occurring in the machine-building industry. The partners can use this platform to plan and realize their projects using the integrated cooperation modules.

A main target of this platform is to support the re-use of the structures of successfully realized projects in the past. Thus it appears that it is mandatory to classify these projects, its structure, content and solutions and to create templates out of this information. These templates build the base for new projects. So these future projects benefit from the knowledge
used in the old ones.

Such “learning cooperation-support-systems” extend the functionalities of groupware-, community- and project-management-systems in an area, that is success-critical for projects.

Moderation VR: Moderation and Creativity Modules in VR Environments

The aim of this project was the development and implementation of a collaborative VR-seminar room. This VR-seminar room is integrated in an online community platform to provide a comprehensive environment in which students can learn and apply moderation and creativity techniques.
Each of the techniques is presented in a hypermedial learning module and shall be practiced in the VR-room
afterwards. Thus, extensive benefits for students as well as teachers are guaranteed. Learning and acting online will not only intensify media literacy but will increase the learner’s effectiveness through self-controlled and problem-based learning facilities.

Partners of this project were the University of Leipzig, the University of Stuttgart, the University of Tübingen, the University of Munich, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) and the company Mindlab.
