Project E-Learning Technologies

The Project “E-Learning Technologies” (EEE Project) is a project at the BIS department. Central topics address aspects of E-Learning Environment Engineering in its technical and social dimensions.

The project had three main goals

  • Maintenance and further development of web based test and examination environments including the corresponding architectural problems of models for problems, tests and correction modes that comply with examination requirements at the Leipzig University.
  • Development and maintenance of the BIS-OLAT Portal, a portal based solution to conduct operative administrative educational requirements on the level of a department based on the Open Source Project OpenOLAT.
  • Organization of professional support for e-learning services at university level using the potential of combination of teaching and practice.

Motivation

Service management in its active combination of service and self service plays an important role in the e-learning area. Reasons for such an interplay are severe and are founded in the nature of knowledge acquisition processes themselves – knowledge acquisition requires a tight coupling between

  • knowledge distribution (service) and
  • own active knowledge acquisition (self service)

from a set of – in the best case freely accessible – knowledge “bricks”.

Technical tools supporting knowledge acquisition should not only take into consideration such a decentralized structure but can it even support actively.

The EEE Project is directed towards the construction of such a decentralized supporting infrastructure that allows service and self service on equal rights, emphasizing on the following topics

  1. develop and maintain a platform, that allows to collect, maintain and distribute competency about functionality and usage of freely accessible Java based SW components for Knowledge Environment Engineering;
  2. pursue the development of own prototypical implementations of such components of different size and granularity;
  3. explore theoretically and practically the integration of such components into existing learning platforms;
  4. systematize and generalize the experience coming from the practical use of such components;
  5. run and maintain SW installations following those rules for or together with external partners.
