Research Groups

The chair of Business Information Systems deals with the whole area of integrative software solutions from the beginning over middleware concepts up to the complete modelling of operational models. New technologies from the research areas of Service Engineering, Knowledge Management, E-Business and Integration Engineering as well as Agile Knowledge Engineering and Semantic Web are developed, tested and integrated in further research projects and teaching.

Competence Center Service Development

The Competence Center Service Development (CCSD) is a research group within the chair of Business Information Systems dealing with research concerning the development of services. On special are of focus is Service Engineering, which exists since the mid-1990s and defines itself as concerned with the systematic development and design of service products using suitable procedure models, methods and tools. Coming from the assumption, that successful services have to be planned systematically, the basic underlying idea is that, as in other engineering disciplines such as product development or software engineering, systematic work is invested in the development of a product, in this case a “service product”. It is argued that by adopting a defined procedure and suitable methods it is possible to create high-quality services.

Prof. Dr. Klaus-Peter Fähnrich is one of founders of this area of research and has contributed pioneer research work to this young field. Along with the rest of the research team ( Kyrill Meyer, Martin Böttcher, Romy Elze, Robert Müller) he is committed to help enterprises build successful services for their customers. The research goals include:

  • Research and Development of models, methods and tools for Service Engineering and contribution of findings to scientific and business communities
  • Contributing the aspects of Service Engineering to the establishing Services Science
  • Education of future “Service Engineers” through University education
  • Standardisation and Internationalization of Services
  • IT enabled Services and IT-Services
  • Innovation Management
  • Transfer of Knowledge to Enterprises through joint projects and partnerships.

Current projects are taking place on a National and European level and focus on the challenges resulting from a development of IT-enabled Services for E-Government, E-Business, IT-Services and the Internationalization of Services.

Knowledge Management

The knowledge management group is mainly concerned with methods and techniques for capturing, organizing, and storing knowledge and experiences of individual workers and groups within organization and making this information available to others in the organization. This includes amongst others the developement of techniques for

  • process-oriented information supply,
  • collaborative information retrieval,
  • interactive information presentation,
  • feedback collection and integration,
  • knowledge modelling and organization,
  • integration of knowledge sources in user applications.

E-Business and Integration Engineering (EBIE)

The main topics of the research group are

Integration Engineering – integration of business information systems

  • methods for supporting integration projects
  • metrics for evaluating integration problems
  • abstraction levels for integration problems and the belonging concepts
  • process models for integration

Model-Driven Integration Engineering – applying model-driven approaches (MDA, AC-MDSD, Software Factories,MDE …) to integration problems

  • metamodels and models for describing integration problems (concepts, relationships, etc.)
  • domain specific modelling, building domain specific languages
  • model transformations between such models
  • tools in the area of model-driven approaches

We mainly apply our solutions in the domains of E-Government and E-Business.

Further interests:

  • reuse in model-driven software engineering, integration engineering, model-driven integration engineering
  • organizational impacts of model-driven software development
  • change of the development process through applying model-driven approaches
  • economic impacts of model-driven approaches
  • affiliation of service and integration engineering approaches (e.g. through aspect-oriented modelling and model-driven technologies)
  • extending our Model-Driven Integration Engineering approach to complex systems

Agile Knowledge Engineering and Semantic Web (AKSW)

The Research Group Agile Knowledge Engineering and Semantic Web (AKSW) has the following goals:

  • Research of methods for Agile Knowledge Engineering inside the research field of the Semantic Web
  • Development of tools and applications for Agile Knowledge Engineering
  • Research of the underlying Semantic Web Technologies
  • Development of fundamental Semantic Web tools and applications

Members are Dr. Sören Auer (head), Muhammad Ahtisham Aslam, Sebastian Dietzold, Jens Lehmann and Thomas Riechert. All relevant information including current projects and publications is presented at the AKSW website.
